Marbling is a traditional art prepared with special methods. On the water in a tray, it is made by transferring the patterns created with paint to paper.
Marbling was used to decorate book bindings and books. The first marbling works were seen in Central Asia in the 13th century. It pervaded to Anatolia through Iran. In the Ottoman period, Turkish craftsmen have developed new methods and techniques.
In the art of marbling, all materials and tools are prepared by the craftsmen. All dyes are optain from nature with naturel methods. “ Kitre ” is a herbal ingredient and it allows the water to condense. “ Öd “ is found in the gallbladder of animals and it allows the dyes on the kitre to spread. Patterns created with paints on water condensed with Kitre are transfered to paper.
For centuries, varieties of marbling such as gelgit, taraklı, hatip, bülbülyuvası, çiçekli have been used. Light green, red and yellow are the most preferred colors in marbling art. Patterns such as flowers, leaves and crescent are often prefferred.
Marbling artisans are representatives of a wide variety of socio – economic cultures. They play an important role in the transmission and practice of knowledge and experience to future generations through the master – apprentice relationship.
The art of marbling is formed by the combination of water representing the source of life, dyes representing the dance of color and the feelings of the craftsmen. This unique art will continue to live with the accumulations of the past and the interpretations of today’s and future craftsmen.
